Overview


Mosquitoes are small, fragile insects with slender bodies, long legs, and a piercing proboscis. They undergo four life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Three main mosquito groups are Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex.

1. American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

  • Black and white stripped body and legs
  • Prefer clean water for larvae development
  • Only females bite to obtain blood for egg development
  • Peak activity at dawn and dusk
  • Transmit diseases like dengue, yellow fever and encephalitis
  • Can lay up to 100 eggs per cycle and survive dormant for up to 9 months
 

2. ANOPHELES MOSQUITOES 

  • Eggs laid singly, float on water, hatch within 2-3 days
  • Recognizable by long palps and black and white scales on wings
  • Active at dusk, dawn or night
  • Primary vector for malaria
3. CULEX MOSQUITOES

 

  • Brown mosquitoes with whitish markings
  • Lay eggs in rafts on stagnant water in various containers
  • Active at dusk and night
  • Transmit diseases like West Nile virus, filariasis, and Japanese encephalitis
